The minimum age of car rental renters is often a questions asked by them and sometimes their [ parents ]. Often when a young person has passed their driving test, they do not thave access to a car and they are keen to start driving. They may at this time consider hiring a vehicle. Unfortunately the hire companies in general are not interested in renting to young drivers. There is one main reason for this which applies to most rental companies -Insurance.
Insurance is a significant cost to rental firms . It could be as much as fifty percent of the cost of the rental . Young drivers from an Insurance perspective are considered high risk. The excess premium would rise significantly if a hire company wanted Insurance that would cover them hiring out to young drivers. This would make it unprofitable to have that facility. The chances of finding a rental firm that can hire to young people is unlikely due to restrictions.
It would also apply to the scenario where there is more than one driver and the primary driver is older. The restriction would still apply. The young drivers are not allowed to use their own car Insurance policy as the car rental companies do not rent to young drivers with their own Insurance ploicy.
The age at which Insurance companies consider drivers to be of less risk is twenty one years of age upwards. As a result rental firms in the UK will often offer the facility to young persons between the age of twenty one and twenty four years to hire a vehicle . However, although these renters are safer they are still thought to be of some risk and a premium is charged. The young drivers will receive a young drivers surcharge by the hire firms.
