This last decade has seen the biggest increase in cruise bookings there has ever been. It can no longer be thought of as an over 60’s activity that only the super-rich can afford and were everybody learns how to waltz somewhere in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. There has been a dramatic diversification in the cruise sector recently, with lots of new offerings based on different destinations, age groups, activities, length and price. What this has meant is that more people are able to enjoy a cruise these days…and they certainly are, with more cruise goers than there have ever been before.
The UK are those at the forefront of this move off of terra firma. Britain has also been a sea-loving nation and it seems they have been proving it by racking up a huge 1.5 million cruises last year between them. Out of the total cruises booked in Europe, this makes up a whopping 35%. Only Germany has a vague chance of challenging this title with a total of 21% market share according to results from a study conducted by Silversea Cruises at the Seatrade cruise convention in Miami.
The Atlantic Islands and the areas of the Mediterranean were top of the list when it came to most popular cruises locations for Europeans. Which just goes to show that nobody can resist a bit of sunbathing and pure waters. There is actually no need for you to step foot off the vessel these days to find entertainment and enjoyment. Most good luxury cruises are equipped with multiple swimming pools, dining halls, theatres and even golf courses.
“The European cruise industry has seen an impressive 66% growth in the number of cruise passengers in the last five years…a trend that is set to continue” says chairman of the ECC and CEO of Peter Deilmann Cruises, David Dingle.
According to Dingle, there are currently 17 new cruise ships being constructed for European companies and will all enter the market by 2012.
