The Maldives – it’s a name that conjures up the image of luxury holidays. You may know the name, but are unsure of where they actually are, other than this side of paradise! The Maldives nestle in the Indian Ocean, made up of 1,190 islands in 26 main sheltered atolls of which only 199 are inhabited.
If you are contemplating Maldives holidays, you are bound to find peace and tranquillity.Virtually every hotel is set on its own exclusive island providing you with the most private and intimate retreat with white powder beaches leading into a calm and azure sea.The Maldives also offers some of the best SCUBA diving and snorkelling in the world. Luxury holidays don’t come much more luxurious than the Iru Fushi Beach & Spa Resort on the pristine Noonu Atoll. This haven is great for just relaxing and taking it easy, but it’s also surrounded by at least 30 dive sites with an abundance of marine life ranging from magnificent manta rays and rare humpback turtles to reef sharks and a rich variety of colourful corals.
Iru Fushi, with its unspoilt landscape and virgin waters, offers fabulous diving for beginners and the more experienced and diving here is relatively easy because of the wide channels, shallow depths and gentle currents. The House Reef at Iru Fushi is located near the diving school and gently slopes down 18 metres to a sandy bottom. Covered with sponges and corals and teeming with neon coloured reef fish, it provides the perfect setting for beginners to experience a first dive.
Other dive sites nearby include the weirdly named Snow White. This offers a kaleidoscope of colourful and beautiful reefs with red berry sponges and green, blue and light brown finger corals all framed by a snow white sandy bottom where hermit crabs and sea stars can be seen. Another intriguingly named site is the Christmas Tree, located north-west of the island and so-called because the profile of the reef looks like a Christmas tree. Even if you don’t feel that energetic, there’s still lots to do in the Maldives, assuming you consider llounging around and simply relaxing as you’ve never relaxed before to be doing something!
