Your house is usually the house that most people visit during the holidays, so you’ll want to teach your children all you can about Thanksgiving so that they can learn about more great reasons to celebrate the day. Here are some of the best ways to teach your children and family about Thanksgiving, as well as some crafts and activities that everyone will enjoy.
One of the things you’ll want to stress to your children is that this holiday is mainly about being grateful. While this is a time that you get together with friends and family to eat great food, this time of year was traditionally used to give thanks for the harvest. Make sure that your children know that things like food and clothing should not be taken for granted, and that taking time to say thank you to those that are responsible for their well-being is a practice they should carry into adulthood.
Another great way to teach your loved ones about Thanksgiving is to take them to a homeless shelter or soup kitchen so that they can directly help those that are less fortunate. It is very comforting to spend this time of year in a safe, warm home with people that you love, and your children need to see that everyone does not have this luxury. Most homeless shelters will allow you to volunteer your time for an hour or two before or after you have your meal at home, and making this a family tradition could help to bring you and your loved ones closer.
You can also teach your family about different cultures and ethnicities when you are sharing information about Thanksgiving. It is believed that the Spaniards were the first to celebrate the holiday in North America, as a way to celebrate their arrival to the New World. Food and festivities were definitely a part of this celebration, so you may want to try a few traditional Spanish dishes for your meal to expose your children and family to new fare. You can also do a little research to find out how different people celebrate this time of year, so you can create crafts and food that will make the lessons a little more real.
If you want to learn more about Thanksgiving for yourself, you can visit your local library for books, videos, and DVDs that will teach you the historical significance of this holiday. You can also find historical accounts and informational books on sites like www.amazon.com or www.bn.com. There are also a number of children’s books on these sites that you can use to tell your little one more about Thanksgiving.
