Christmas is an occasion abundant in history and tradition. People around the world may celebrate this season in various ways yet one thing is clear, everyone is experiencing the best times of their life in Christmas. Most people spend it with their friends and family, relishing each other’s companionship, remembering warm memories, and creating new ones.
They say that objects, good or bad, come in threes. Christmas has a lot of special traditions yet the three that stand out are Christmas trees, fruit cakes and Christmas cards.
Every family has its own secret formula in preparing fruit cakes that is well-kept and passed down from generation to generation. All over the world, fruit cakes have several varieties as the difference in the ingredients included become apparent. In the UK, for one, fruit cakes are moist in texture and richer in flavor than their US equivalent. Fruit cakes are also a part of the UK Christmas tradition, usually covered with royal icing and marzipan. They are then adorned with holly leaves, artificial or real berries, and other decorations commemorating Christmas.
Now, what is Christmas if there is no tree teeming with colorful lights and ornaments? It is likewise a special Christmas practice wherein the dads and their sons go out and pick the tree and the whole family adorns it, with the unique privilege given to the youngest member of the family to place the star on top of the tree. By tradition, the tree is fixed and bedecked on Christmas Eve, December 24th and will be removed the day following twelfth night, January 6th. Coniferous trees and evergreens are the widely used trees and the firs, pines and spruces being the three most common species.
On the other hand, presents and personalized Christmas cards are part of our lives. Thus, Christmas would not be perfect without giving away and receiving a Christmas souvenir in one way or another. People spend a lot of their time planning what to send their relatives on this special occasion. It is likewise known to everyone that Christmas is the most hectic shopping time of the year where people are more willing to spend in the spirit of giving and of Christmas. Business Christmas cards are given out by big corporations to let their clients know how much the company appreciate their loyalty and hope for an improved relationship in the future.
These are merely three of the Christmas customs that, whether we like it or not, we all yearn for each year. After the Yuletide season, after cleaning up the clutter in the kitchen, after removing the tree, we can’t wait for the subsequent Christmas holiday.
