The spirit of Christmas descends upon a nation. The child inside each of us renews the holiday traditions within their families. We yearn for the peace on earth feeling that inspires acts of generosity. Our hopes are refreshed and we count our blessings.

I strained a bit loading the double stroller, crib, and baby bath toys into the eddie bauer convertible. The kids are coming home for the holiday. Our youngest daughter is a Mom now and we are preparing from bath to bedroom to have our granddaughter with us for her first Christmas.

My wife and I spread the tubs of decorations out in the family room. I stacked firewood outside and put a couple 3-hour burning store logs by the hearth. As night arrived early I put the outside lights on to twinkle and chase. Soon the sounds of car doors and kids were heard and we met them at the door.

From New York City apartments to ranches in Montana families were gathering for Christmas. It is the blending of sounds from the conversations dipped in laughter to the glad voices of kids that are the holiday soundtrack. Hot buttered drinks and cider, Christmas music playing, and finally the star affixed to the top of the tree. The kids were watching a favorite holiday movie and the adults settled down to visit. I held my granddaughter and marveled at the resemblance to her mother and my wife.

The next day was Christmas Eve and the kids all opened one gift after supper. The turkey was in the oven and we were off to midnight services to worship with our family. The grandchildren saw their parents and grandparents modeling their faith. Holding my daughter’s baby made me think about that baby born so long ago.

Faith, hope, and love cannot be gift wrapped. My wife had diplomatically put out the word that shopping for the kids was okay. She had something else in mind for the parents. Aunts and Uncles would be challenged in a way that the siblings would appreciate.

My wife wanted everyone to spend time and put effort into their Christmas gifts. She decreed that all presents were to be under ten dollars in cost or materials. The presents were to be made by their own hand. They could be funny, sentimental or useful.

Looking back on our Christmas day celebration I can say it exceeded my expectations. The children were excited, the meal was prepared with loving hands, and the gifts were imaginative. Everyone wrote a Christmas memory down on paper and it went into the family Christmas book. I am looking forward to next year’s chapter.

My intention here? We spent the big day together. Every moment of it. That time of the year has arrived and with spring just around the corner that can only mean one thing - it’s tidy up time.

 

A couple of weekends ago the sun was shining and so unfortunately this made my house look a little bit shabby and I could see a covering of dust that had no right being there. Because of this I decided that in my house spring had arrived early and it was definitely time to start the cleaning.

 

It all started off well and I had really good intentions of cleaning from top to toe. Our kitchen was first on the hit list and because that took longer than I thought, I was already starting to feel weary. However I ploughed on and next on the list of rooms to tidy up was our Utility room.   In our house this is one of those rooms where everything gets dumped and the door gets shut.   I hadn’t been working long when I stumbled across a load of cheap books that my mum had given to me. This set me off on a lovely trip down memory lane and that was the end of my cleaning for the day.

 

Mum was a real fan of her books and was always happiest when she had a book in her hand.   She didn’t really mind what she read it could be anything ranging from fiction books, romance books and she even owned a few cook books.   I’m not sure why she had the cook books, because she never really seemed to be adventurous with her cooking. Perhaps she just liked looking at all the lovely colourful pictures!

 

Suddenly I was back 5 years ago when we had all gone on holiday together to the Canary Islands. In my cases I had packed all the usual holiday necessities, sun tan lotion, swimming costumes and beach towels.   When mum unpacked her case it was absolutely full of books. Without a lie I think she had nearly a dozen with her.   We were only away for 2 weeks so I thought it was hilarious. Mind you I will admit she came home with a fantastic suntan because she had spent her entire holiday sunbathing around the pool with a book in one hand and a glass of wine in the other.

 

The spring cleaning didn’t really go the way I had planned, but then you know what it can be like sometimes when you get distracted and when cleaning is involved, I can’t say that I really mind.
